Ingress vs Egress: What is it

Contents

In networking, ingress and egress refer to the flow of data into and out of a network device or interface.

Ingress refers to the flow of data into a network device or interface, such as a router or switch. This data is usually coming from an external source, such as the internet, and is entering the network.

Egress, on the other hand, refers to the flow of data out of a network device or interface. This data is usually destined for an external destination, such as another network or the internet.

Ingress and egress are often used in the context of network traffic management, such as Quality of Service (QoS) policies or Access Control Lists (ACLs), where network administrators may want to control or limit the flow of traffic entering or leaving a particular network device or interface.
